Fitness Instructor UAE careers updatePosted on October 31, 2013

Oct 2013

You’ll need to get your fitness qualifications into shape if you want to practice as a fitness instructor in Dubai.

Fitness business card

In 2012, Dubai Sports Authority issued an order for all Fitness Instructors to register themselves with the authorities. It also stated that to register, instructors would be required to have the necessary qualifications to prove their abilities within their profession. The call came after the exercise sector raised concerns that uninsured and poor-quality instructors were becoming more common and that there was a risk clients could get injured.

So what does this mean for those already working in the exercise sector, or those who want to get into it?
Well the good news is that a number of unqualified instructors have been forced to leave the market, which has caused an increase in the number of positions vacant for qualified and registered individuals to apply for. For those seeking to enter the profession it has of course become much more difficult to do so, but as a result of the change in policy, a number of professional fitness training qualifications have recently become available here in Dubai, making it really simple to find a course and get adequately qualified.

Fitness Instructor Salaries
There’s various indicators as to how much a Fitness Instructor in the UAE could earn, but as a profession where you may have to secure your own clients and be paid an hourly instruction fee, it isn’t easy to get a clear understanding and companies operate differently.

  • Payscale suggests anywhere from 2500 AED to 14,000 AED per month.
  • Salary Explorer offers an average of 11,500 AED

Some recent salaries presented in job adverts were 3,000 AED, 5,000 AED, 6,500 AED and 10,000 AED per month, but again did not indicate whether this included commission etc.

When interviewing freelance instructors who make house-calls, it was revealed that they can earn up to 250 AED per hour and do this for about 4 hours per day, 6 days per week, earning themselves about 26,000 AED per month. On top of that some teach group classes, school groups or even work a few days a week on a basic salary + commission at a local gym. One individual stated that they earned up to 40,000 AED per month but worked very long hours at multiple locations to achieve this.

Where to look for the jobs
Jobs listed online on sites such as Laimoon tend to be located at either private health clubs or in hotels. For those looking to enter the profession this is a stable starting point as it offers the security of a salary and visa etc and commission can be earned on top. For those seeking to make a substantial earning from the fitness industry, establishing yourself as a quality freelance brand is key to securing house-calls and group classes. However, freelancers require special licences and these can be quite costly.
